A Pandemic Note by Sharon Houk So Arlene gets into the back of the ambulance yelling, “I left you a note.” And off she goes in her orange fuzzy slippers and pink housecoat with a full-blown case of Covid-19. I didn’t see any note. And anyway, this was the first time she had spoken to me in two weeks. Look, after thirty-three years of marriage, you stop feeling like talking to one another. Houk 6/4/2005 Chicago, IL Gleacher Center I wrote this little poem while waiting for my first writing class to start at The University of Chicago Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies . I think I have been on time 2 times in my entire life. This was the first time. The second time was three weekends ago when I showed up early for an Iowa Summer Writing Festival workshop with Gordon Mennenga . (What a great class!) Tigers on the Savanna by Sharon Houk “The baby’s on the roof,” Charlotte said. I looked up to see my wife of nine years frozen like a statue with a long slender finger pointing out of the open balcony door. I took long measured CEO strides toward the door and in my best Just-In-Time management voice said, “What’s going on here, honey?” We didn’t make a habit of allowing the baby on the roof. The baby was an idea that sprang from a bottle of Two Hands Shiraz and Charlotte’s inability to remember if it was one or two days that she had forgotten to take the pill. Our Sunday afternoons had hitherto been spent reading The New York Times and playing with kitchen gadgets. After the baby was born, it was pretty much the same with minor interruptions. The change came recently and ferociously with the advent of crawling. Nothing was safe. The Chihuly glass pieces had to be removed for safe keeping.
